what is emdr

EMDR, Eye-movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (that's a mouthful), is a structured therapy that encourages the patient to focus briefly on the trauma memory while simultaneously experiencing bilateral stimulation (A left/right syncopated movement with the eyes, utilizing sensors, or tapping), which reduces the emotion associated with the trauma memories. Extensively researched and proven effective, this therapuetic method helps people recover from trauma, PTSD symptoms, disorders such as anxiety and depression, negative belief patterns and other distressing life experiences.

EMDR therapy does not require talking in detail about the distressing issue. Rather than focusing on changing the emotions, thoughts, or behaviors resulting from the distressing issue, EMDR allows the brain to resume its natural healing process. For many clients, EMDR therapy can be completed in fewer sessions than other psychotherapies.
